School-based HPV vaccination positively impacts parents’ attitudes toward adolescent vaccination

This qualitative study aimed to explore parental attitudes, knowledge and decision-making about HPV vaccination for adolescents in the context of a gender-neutral school-based Australian National Immunisation Program (NIP). Semi-structured interviews with parents eligible were undertaken as part an evaluation cluster-randomised controlled trial complex intervention 40 schools (2013–2015). In this study, we purposively recruited nested sample from 11 across two jurisdictions. Interviews explored parent understanding vaccine program; decision-making; their adolescent’s vaccination; vaccination, sexual awareness behaviour. Transcripts analysed using inductive deductive thematic analysis. Parents’ 22 had positive attitudes towards delivery platform was key driver shaping acceptance vaccination. They difficulty recalling, or did not read, information sent home. Some involved discussions parents’ responsible ultimate decision-making. All supported in-school education limited cervical cancer largely absent regarding males. NIP inclusion is central acceptance. More intensive communication strategies including school opportunities are required improve HPV-related disease promote adolescents.
